Wendig can write and has created interesting characters and an interesting world. If you enjoy science fiction/fantasy/dystopian/horror, start with the fist book in this series and go from there! For me, this book really shined in parts and then felt dragged out in others. I enjoy Wendig's writing and loved his book, The Book of Accidents which was over 500 pages but didn't feel long, this one did. I believe I would have enjoyed this book more had it been skimmed down a bit. I was curious to see what they were doing now, how their world looked and what it was like to live in it.ĭid the book need to be this long? I don't think so. Readers will know the shepherds and their plight. This book takes place five years after the events of the first book. Their civilization is far from being a utopia.Īs with the first book, this was a highly imaginative and well thought out book. Ouray, Colorado was the destination, and it is there that they began setting up their civilization. Many loved ones (shepherds) followed them looking for answers.

who imagined the apocalypse.Īgainst these threats, Benji, Marcy, Shana, and the rest have only one hope: one another. And in the very heart of Ouray, the most powerful survivor of all is plotting its own vision for the new world: Black Swan, the A.I. The forces of cruelty and brutality are amassing under the leadership of self-proclaimed president Ed Creel. Among them are Benji, the scientist struggling through grief to lead the town Marcy, the former police officer who wants only to look after the people she loves and Shana, the teenage girl who became the first shepherd-and an unlikely hero whose courage will be needed again.īecause the people of Ouray are not the only survivors, and the world they are building is fragile. The survivors, sleepwalkers and shepherds alike, have a dream of rebuilding human society. Because the sleepwalking epidemic was only the first in a chain of events that led to the end of the world-and the birth of a new one. Their secret destination: Ouray, a small town in Colorado that would become one of the last outposts of civilization. They were followed on their quest by the shepherds: friends and family who gave up everything to protect them.
